In the US, city and county governments usually issue building permits for decks through local building departments. The process for getting a deck permit can vary by location and project, but here are some general steps you can take:

  1. 1. Find out who issues permits

    In most cases, this is the Building Inspections Department, which is often located in the City Hall building. You can also try searching online or calling local government offices. 

  2. 2. Contact the building department

    Explain your proposed deck design and ask for the application form if a permit is required. 

  3. 3. Prepare your application

    You'll likely need to include the following documents: 

    • A completed application 

    • Two sets of construction plans 

    • Site plans 

    • Drawings of the deck 

    • Framing views 

    • If you're a contractor, a copy of your license 

  4. 4. Submit your application and pay fees

    You'll also need to pay a filing fee. The cost depends on the city or town. 

  5. 5. Wait for your permit

    Depending on how busy your area is, you could receive your permit in a few weeks.
